Friday, July 4, at 8pm

Author and historian David McCullough narrates this Oscar-nominated documentary telling the unique story of the Statue of Liberty, from its creation in France to its eventual arrival in New York Harbor. The film includes several features with figures such as former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, author James Baldwin, singer Ray Charles, and playwright Arthur Miller as well as historical material and film footage.

Host Tony Danza joins us live from Washington D.C. for an award-winning musical and patriotic extravaganza featuring some of the country’s best musical artists, including original rock ‘n’ roller Little Richard, country music sensation Dierks Bentley, actress and singer Hayden Panettiere, and Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Erich Kunzel.

In The Big Country, Academy Award winner Burl Ives portrays a family patriarch involved in a bitter land feud. The movie features an impressive musical score and won an Academy Award. In Dial M for Murder, master filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock mixes suspense and mystery with dangerous romance in the story of a three-cornered love affair that leads to murder.

Join the entire Osmond family as well as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square for this year’s Pioneer Day concert at the Conference Center. The concert not only showcases the choir with traditional Pioneer Day favorites and American folk hymns and songs, but also features “some of the wonderful music the Osmonds are famous for,” says director Mack Wilberg, who conducts both the choir and the orchestra for the concert. Women of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gather and learn more about the gospel each year at BYU’s Women’s Conference. This year’s theme of “Awake, Arise, and Come unto Him” is taken from Moroni 10:30-32. Tune in for select messages from Sister Cheryl C. Lant, general president of the Primary, Sister Silvia H. Allred, a member of the Relief Society general presidency, as well as Barbara Thompson, Ana Maria Coburn, and more.

This series follows Beijing’s transformation in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympics. Episodes include rare footage of key people and highly restricted locations, including Olympic construction sites. In addition to looking behind the scenes of the Olympic grounds, viewers will experience the multitude of ways China’s capitol is preparing to host the Olympics, including a look into the transportation system, medical facilities, hospitality, and efforts to minimize pollution.

Award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns tells the story of baseball in America in three exciting segments. He starts with “Shadow Ball,” which covers the sport’s desperate attempts to survive the Great Depression and looks into the world of the Negro Leagues. “The National Pastime” leads off with the amazing baseball season of 1941 and then looks into how World War II changed the sport. Finally “The Capital of Baseball” celebrates the glorious heyday of baseball in New York City and illuminates some of its most memorable moments.

Explore new discoveries in computer science, astronomy, engineering, and medicine this month. Scientists examine a “dark matter” detector buried at the foot of an abandoned mine, research mice that are retrieving lost memories, and search for the very first primate—which might turn out to be a tree-climbing creature the size of a mouse. This program tells the stories of 15 of this nation’s grandest park lodges, delving into the time periods and personalities that shaped each building and its setting. First visit the lodges of Death Valley, the Northwest, and the Hawaiian volcanoes. From the arid desert to the lush forest, each lodge has something unique to offer. Next, tour the lodges of Alaska, from Jackson Lake to Glacier Bay in the shadow of North America’s highest mountain peak. Learn the stories behind these lodges and see the many different ways to enjoy the awe inspiring beauty of America’s national parks.
